Mercury, also known as Mercurius, Merqurius, Mirqurios or Mircurios, is the Roman messenger god and one of the Dii Consentes. He is the Roman counterpart of Hermes.

Overview[]

Mercury was worshipped as the icon of grain trade. He was considered the messenger of the gods, and is said to have descended to distribute the bounty of commercial success from time to time. Mercury was also revered as the Psychopomp - a figure who guides the souls of the deceased to the afterlife. Since the Romans equated Mercury with Hermes, much of the god's myths were reinterpreted in Roman literature and art.

Appearance[]

Mercury is often represented as holding a purse to represent his business functions. Usually, he is shown with the attributes of Hermes, wearing a winged hat and sandals and carrying a caduceus. Mercury is sometimes depicted with a cockerel, as herald of the new day, and a ram, as the symbol of fertility. He is also shown with a tortoise shell lyre, which he invented.

Personality[]

Mercury is more disciplined, militaristic, and warlike than Hermes, portrayed as the god of commerce instead of the god of thieves, trickery, and travel. Despite that, he can still be cunning, resourceful, and trickery as he stole Apollo's cows when he was a baby. He also has a knack for pranks, a trait which is passed on to most, if not all of his children.

Powers and Abilities[]

Mercury is a extremely powerful god. His vast number of worshippers greatly enhances his powers, allowing him to surpass Apollo and Diana in power. Despite his power, he is not powerful enough to rival Mars, Minerva, and the first generation of the Dii Consentes.
