"Merpeople are mythical sea-dwelling creatures, having the body of a human and a fish's tail below the waist. Although beautiful and alluring, they should not be underestimated for they can be as cruel and vindictive as they can be mind. It really depends on the mermaid or merman and how well you treat them."
―A description of the Merpeople

Merpeople, (also known as Merfolk) called Mermaids if they're female and Mermen if they're male, are legendary aquatic creatures of the sea, with the upper bodies and heads of humans and fish tails for lower bodies. They are the 2nd race created by Lady Magic and although they are categorized as hybrids, they are excluded from the suspicion and prejudice that many hybrids often find themselves under.

Overview[]

Tales of the merpeople first came from Syria, over 3000 years ago. Sailors spread these stories when they sailed to ports in Near East, Asia, Africa, and Europe, where it was believed to have the greatest population of mermaids and mermen.

The merpeople live in the Seven Seas. Since they were created by Lady Magic, they are the only hybrids who are not the result of the union between two beings from different species. In stories and art around the world, mermaids are depicted as beautiful, with combs and mirrors. Mermen are considered to be less attractive than their female counterparts, but still possess cold and intimidating beauty.

Mermaids and mermen alike are powerful creatures. At times, they can be helpful and bring with them good luck and blessings. However, they can also be cruel, sinking ships and drowning sailors. In fact, it is believed that they possess a great amount of wealth due to the treasure from the ships they sank.

Description[]

Mermaids have far more prominence in myths than their male counterparts. Many stories centered around them detail their relationships with mortal men. In most of them, the man would hide the mermaid's cap, belt, comb, or mirror, and force the mermaid to marry him. However, should the mermaid find her object, she would return to the sea.

Although uncommon, there are cases when one of the merpeople would fall in love with a mortal on their own accord. The most notable example is the Mermaid of Zennor, whose image was carved onto a bench near a church in Zennor.

Merpeople are divided into their own civilizations. Many of them live in Atlantis, under the rule of Poseidon. However, there are those who choose to live under the rules of other sea deities or form their own civilizations away from others.

The appearances of the merpeople vary, from the Sirens in Ancient Greece, to the Miengu in Africa to the Japanese Ningyo. However, one similarity is clear between all these different interpretations of the merfolk: they have an innate and seductive charm that has captured the minds of people all around the world, causing their legends and stories to persist even after so many years.
