Baldr, also known as Baldur, is the Germanic and Norse god of light, joy, purity, beauty, innocence, peace, and reconciliation, the second son of Odin and Frigg, and the husband of Nanna. He was killed by Loki, who tricked his mother into revealing his only weakness: mistletoe.

Overview[]

Baldr has in possession one of the largest ships in the universe, which is called Ringhorn or Hringhorni. The great hall Breidablik is his home, which is devoid of all that is evil and impure.

Courageous and honorable, Baldr was loved by all, with the exception of Loki. When Ragnarök ends with nearly his entire pantheon wiped out, he will return to the world of the living and oversee the next generation.

History[]

Disturbing Dreams[]

Baldr received a dream of his own death, which horrified him. His mother Frigg, wanting to prevent it, travelled across the Earth and made every creature, object, and element swear an oath to not harm him. By the time she was done, she was exhausted and forgot about one small plant: mistletoe. However, believing that something as weak and insignificant as mistletoe wouldn't be able to harm her powerful son, she decided to ignore it.

Loki, jealous of the attention Baldr was receiving, disguised himself and tricked Frigg into revealing that mistletoe was Baldr's only weakness. Around the same time, the Norse deities were taking turns throwing objects at Baldr to see if they could harm him. Thanks to his mother's efforts though, all of the objects were ineffective in causing even the slightest damage.

Death[]

Loki took a dart crafted from mistletoe and gave it to the blind god Höðr. Unaware of what it was, Höðr threw it at Baldr, inadvertently killing him. For this act, even if it was unintentional, Odin arranged for his other son Váli to kill Höðr when he comes of age.

Baldr was ceremonially burnt upon his ship Hringhorni. While being carried to the ship Odin whispered something into his ear. As he laid on the pyre he was given the magical ring Draupnir. Thor blessed the pyre with his hammer Mjølnir and kicked the dwarf Litr into the fire. Baldr's wife, Nanna, was also placed onto the pyre as she had died of grief upon seeing her husband's corpse. Baldr's horse with all its trappings was burned on the pyre as well.

Since none of the deities were able to push Hringhorni into the sea, they sent for Hyrrokin. The giantess came riding upon a wolf gave the ship a push so great that the earth shook and the fire flashed from the rollers.

Time in the Underworld[]

Desperate to get her son back, Frigg sent the messenger Hermod to the underworld in order to request Hel to allow Baldr to return. Hel agreed on the conditions that every being in the worlds of the living and death would weep for him. All did, except a giantess, Þökk, who is actually Loki in disguise. Thus, Baldr was unable to leave the underworld.

However, he received fine treatment in the land of the dead from Hel herself, although she was still rather distant. At some point, Baldr fell in love with the underworld goddess and she reciprocated his feelings due to the respect and affection he showed her. For this reason Hel did not wish for him to leave her realm but was forced to relent after Ragnarök passed.

Return[]

When the disastrous war Ragnarök drew to an end and nearly all Norse deities have perished, Baldr finally made his return to the land of the living and mended his relationship with his brother Höðr. Along with the deities who survived, they recalled the old traditions and discussed the future in order to avoid the mistakes made in the past.

While talking, the deities found the golden game pieces that the Æsir once used and, just like their fathers, they started a new round of the game. And with it, a new cycle began.
