Astarte is the Phoenician/Canaanite goddess of fertility, sexuality, love, and war and the patroness of Hispania. She is worshipped under many names throughout the Mediterranean and is an incarnation of the goddess Aphrodite.

Overview[]

Astarte is one of the three great Canaanite goddesses, the other two being Asherah and Anath. Not only is she the goddess of sexual love and fertility but she is also the goddess of war. The word astarot, in the Hebrew Bible, is derived from Astarte's name and means increase or progeny, which indicates Astarte's role as the goddess of fertility.

The worship of this goddess was repeatedly condemned, most likely because it held great appeal. Her presence as a female deity was quite compelling, since she was surrounded in a religious environment filled with male deities.

Description[]

Astarte is associated with war, but many myths generally focused on her impressive hunting abilities as well as her relationship with the gods Baal and El. She is often depicted as a beautiful woman with wings or horns, driving a chariot led by horses. The dove, lion, and bee are associated with her.

Her name was said to be connected to the Christian celebration Easter, although this statement was often challenged. There is the possibility that informed later fertility goddesses, whose festivals were Christianized like many other celebrations that used to belong to deities. Despite her worship having faded away, she retains much of her popularity and is seen as a source of empowerment and inspiration among the Neo-Pagan and Wiccan.
